In-Well Pressure Tanks and Pitless Modules

Three models of the Cycle Stop Valve can be used inside the well casing. The CSV1, CSV1.25, and the CSV1W are all small enough to be installed inside 4" casing. These valves were used for several years with an In Well Pressure tank manufactured by In Well Technologies of Lena, Wisconsin. For several years, In Well Technologies operated under license by Cycle Stop Valves, Inc. Installing a tank inside the well casing using a control valve of any kind is protected by more than one patent owned by Cycle Stop Valves, Inc. A couple of major problems with these In Well Pressure Tanks were never solved. The problem are that these tanks are not able to retain their air charge, and they don’t have sufficient draw down (less than ½ gallon). As of November 2nd, 2006, In Well Technologies no longer has a license agreement to utilize the patented process of installing control valves with in well pressure tanks. Any tank installed inside the well casing utilizing a control valve after November 2nd, 2006 is subject to a patent infringement suite totaling three times the damages incurred by the patent holder.

The CSV1, CSV1.25, and the CSV1W can be used with tanks that are buried in the ground or installed further downstream in crawl spaces or mechanical rooms. The previously mentioned valves as well as the CSV1Z, CSV2W, or even the CSV3B2T can be installed in the well when used with a small tank and a Pitless Module as manufactured by H2Optimal of Nebraska.

The CSV1W will measure 3.95" at it's widest point. The CSV1W is adjustable from 45 to 70 PSI. These valves are preset to 50 PSI. The CSV1W has reduced pressure fall off and a minimum friction loss of 25 PSI. There is 13 PSI of reduced pressure fall off at 20 GPM. This valve having been preset to 50 PSI will maintain 50 PSI when there is about 2 GPM being used. When there is 20 GPM being used the 13 PSI fall off will cause the CSV1W to hold 37 PSI. These pressures are regulated at the elevation that the valve is installed. If the valve is installed below a pitless adapter, the depth to the CSV1W is important.

For example the pitless is 4' below grade. If the CSV is installed 6' below the pitless adapter the CSV1W will be installed 10' below the surface. The CSV1W can be submerged when using the o-ring and cap that is included. At a flow rate of 20 GPM the CSV1W will be regulating 37 PSI. After lifting another 10' the pressure at grade will be 4 PSI less or 33 PSI. At a flow rate of 2 GPM the CSV1W will be regulating 50 PSI and with 4 PSI loss due to elevation the pressure at grade will be 46 PSI. If the pressure switch is installed at grade level the shut off point must be higher than 46 PSI. A pressure switch setting of 30-50 or 40-60 would be appropriate.

The CSV1 and CSV1.25 comes in three preset pressure settings which are 40, 50, and 60 PSI, and has a maximum inlet pressure of 150 PSI. There is a coupling called a CSC1 or CSC1.25 that must be installed over the valve to allow the valve to hold weights up to 500 or 1,000 pounds. The same calculation for elevation and pressure should be used as with the above example. However, the CSV1 and CSV1.25 are constant pressure valves and do not have reduced pressure fall off. This means a CSV160 will hold 60 PSI throughout the range of the pump from 1 GPM to 30 GPM. The CSV1.2560 will hold 60 PSI constant throughout the range of the pump from 2 GPM to 50 GPM. If this valve is installed 10' below grade, pressure at the ground level will be a constant 56 PSI. The shut off pressure of the pressure switch must be higher than 56 PSI, making the proper switch setting 40-60, or for a longer run time 50-70 PSI. These valves can be submerged if the air vent is drilled out to a larger size. Call the factory for instructions.

When using very small pressure tanks, great care should be taken to prevent leaks in the system. Additional draw down is required if there are leaks in the system. (See Sizing a Tank for Residential Systems with Leaks)
